Chiesa di Ognissanti
Conservation assessment was carried out on the wall surfaces surrounding the crucifix at Chiesa di Ognissanti, Florence. The church is of exceptional historical significance — it contains major works by Sandro Botticelli and Domenico Ghirlandaio, and is the burial site of Botticelli himself.
The assessment involved imaging to document the current condition of the surfaces, followed by small-scale cleaning tests to evaluate methods for removing surface deposits without affecting the underlying paint layer. Consolidation tests were also conducted in fragile areas to assess suitable materials for stabilising paint and plaster.
The work was conducted as a preliminary investigation to establish a basis for future conservation intervention and the long-term preservation of the painted surfaces.
Conservation Methodology
Imaging techniques recorded the current condition of the wall surfaces and identified areas of deterioration or instability.
Small test areas were cleaned to assess suitable methods for removing surface deposits without affecting the original paint layer.
Limited consolidation tests were conducted in fragile areas to evaluate materials that could stabilise the paint and plaster layers.
Full documentation of the assessment, including imaging records, test results, and recommendations for future conservation intervention.
