Personal Practice

Ceramics and Well-being

Medium Clay, hand-building and wheel-throwing
Context Personal practice, outside formal study

This body of work explores ceramics as a contemplative and restorative practice. Made outside of formal study, these pieces prioritise the process of making over the production of an object: the tactile quality of clay, the rhythm of the wheel, and the particular kind of attention that working with one’s hands requires.

Working with clay has a particular relationship to ideas of well-being and recovery. The material is forgiving and immediate; it records every gesture and responds to pressure in ways that demand presence. The pieces here were made during periods when making itself was more important than what was made.
